APOG Introduction to Research Course

The CanMEDS 2000 Project outlines skills required by Residents in the new millennium. As Scholar, upon completion of a specialty program, you should be able to pose a research question, develop a proposal, plan a methodological approach, carry out the project, and defend and disseminate the results. The APOG Introduction to Research course will introduce you to a basic level of research training as required by the Royal College. It is a unique opportunity to interact with your counterparts from across the country, while developing critical appraisal and research methodology skills. Faculty with research interests are most welcome to attend.

  • Where do ideas originate? Finding the time.
  • How to write a research proposal.
  • How to submit a manuscript to a medical journal.
  • Study design: Case-control, cohort, RCT.
  • Sample size estimation and meta-analysis.
  • Basic statistics for clinicians: Relative versus absolute risk, NNT, Odds ratio, confidence intervals, p values, t est, chi square analysis, diagnostic test statistics.
  • Evidence-based medicine resources such as The Cochrane Library.
  • Literature search strategies using Pubmed.
  • Interactive critical appraisal exercises.
  • Dynamic PowerPoint presentations.
  • Effective presentation skills.
